Snow Drop: A Harmonious Blend of Geometry and Light

Nicolas Brevers' Award-Winning Lighting Design Inspired by Nature and Geometry

In a world where design meets functionality, the Snow Drop lighting fixture by Nicolas Brevers stands out. Inspired by the harmony of nature and the elegance of geometry, this unique piece of art illuminates spaces while offering a soothing sensation of well-being.

Nicolas Brevers, a designer known for his passion for geometry and aesthetics, has created the Snow Drop, a pendant and modular light fixture that is as much a work of art as it is a source of light. The design, which won the Silver A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2017, is a testament to Brevers' commitment to creating designs that are not only visually appealing but also functional and emotionally resonant.

The Snow Drop's unique properties lie in its refined geometric design, made of golden brass rods that evoke the elegant shape of a diamond. The fixture is equipped with a white concrete spherical pulley system, allowing the user to modulate the light intensity to their preference. The vintage amber Edison bulb is housed in a tetrahedral-shaped box made of opalescent white plexiglass, which can be closed or opened to create a shadow play of geometric shapes.

True to its name, the Snow Drop was inspired by the three-petaled flower of the same name. When the plexiglass box is opened, it blooms into three fractal triangles, mimicking the delicate unfolding of a snowdrop flower. This design element not only adds a touch of nature-inspired beauty to the fixture but also enhances its functionality by allowing the user to control the intensity and direction of the light.

The Snow Drop was developed in Brevers' workshop in Brussels and a local fablab, Openfab Brussels, between September 2016 and February 2017. The design process involved extensive research and experimentation, with a focus on finding the perfect balance of lightweight materials and ideal proportions. The result is a lighting fixture that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also invokes a sense of purity and delicacy, much like the flower it is named after.

Despite the challenges faced in designing a smooth and harmonious pulley system and finding flexible yet strong materials to connect the different elements, Brevers was able to create a design that is both innovative and functional. The Snow Drop is a testament to the power of design to transform spaces and create a sense of well-being, making it a worthy recipient of the prestigious Silver A' Design Award.
